10 Must Know Facts about Sunscreen
Sunscreen Can Expire
Yes, sunscreen can expire, whether opened or unopened. Some throw away sunscreen that’s still good to use, while others are using expired sunscreen that doesn’t offer the promised protection or even case skin irritation. Read this guide to make sure you’re protected (and save money if your sunscreen is still good to use!): Does Sunscreen Expire?
30 SPF or more
A sunscreen with 30 SPF will effectively block most UV. Depending on your skin type, you may opt for sunscreen with higher SPF. We recommend to read this guide to understand how SPF works and discover what the best protection level is for your skin: Understanding SPF & Choosing the Best Protection for your Skin.
Think Water Resistant
Manufacturers are no longer allowed to advertise sunscreen as ‘waterproof’. Instead, it’s either water resistant (meaning effective for 40 min) or very water resistant (meaning effective for 80min). If you plan to swim during your holidays, make sure to check if the sunscreen you get is water-resistant or not. It’s important to reapply sunscreen every two hours after sweating or getting out of water.
Apply Enough: Shot Glass Rule
Many people do not apply enough sunscreen. The rule of thumb to apply is to use 1 teaspoon of sunscreen to cover your face & neck and a shot glass to cover your whole body.
Broad spectrum Protection
There are two types of ultraviolette (UV) rays that can harm your skin: UVA and UVB. The former may cause premature skin-aging and wrinkles while the latter (UVB) may cause sun-burn. We recommend to purchase a sunscreen which offers protection for both types, known as ‘broad spectrum protection’.
Sunscreen in Winter/Indoor?
Should you wear sunscreen in the Winter and/or indoor? Science says, yes, yes and yes! UV Rays are simply all year round present, and penetrate your skin causing dark spots, wrinkles and skin damage. In a snow landscape, your UV exposure potentially increases by 80%. Learn more: Should you wear sunscreen every day?
No Sunscreen for Babies
Do not use sunscreen for children younger than 6 months, due to possible skin sensitivity issues. Instead, keep young kids in the shades as much as possible, and have them wear long sleeves, long pants and a hat.
Spray On Sunscreen?
Sunscreen sprays are convenient, but if applied wrong they may not offer as much protection. Make sure to spray plenty and rubbing it into the skin carefully.
Sunscreen is Safe!
Is sunscreen toxic? Is it bad for you? There’s a lot of misinformation out there, especially on social media, claiming that sunscreen and SPF is unsafe. There’s no proof for that. What we do know is that not using sunscreen is unsafe, and may cause skin cancer in the long term.
Sunscreen & Tanning
Sunscreen doesn’t prevent tanning. While sunscreen blocks a certain percentage of UVA (responsible for tanning) it doesn’t prevent all of it. Learn more about how tanning works, and discover the tanning effect by skin type: Why You’re Still Tanning with Sunscreen.
Sunscreen & Sunbed
What many people wonder is whether or not one can or should wear sunscreen on a sunbed. The short answer is, yes you can, and no you shouldn’t! Find out why: Can You Wear Sunscreen on a Sunbed?
